Aesthetics Consultation Glossary | Nuva Narellan
Plain-language terms for your consultation
You do not need to learn technical vocabulary before visiting Nuva Aesthetics. This glossary explains words you may encounter in our consultation guides and suggests questions to ask when a term is unclear. These are general explanations, not diagnoses, personalised advice or guarantees about a procedure.
Assessment
The process of gathering and considering information about your concern and circumstances. Ask what an assessment includes, who performs it and whether another healthcare professional should be involved.
Aftercare
Instructions and support relating to the period after a procedure. Ask for advice specific to the procedure and your circumstances, including contact details for concerns. A general online checklist does not replace individual instructions.
Alternatives
Other approaches to discuss before deciding, including another form of care, referral, waiting or having no procedure. Ask why a proposed option is being considered over the alternatives.
Asymmetry
A difference between sides. Describing a difference does not establish its cause or mean a procedure is required. Ask what can be assessed and what limitations apply; perfect symmetry is not promised by our guides.
Consultation only
A discussion and assessment appointment without treatment during that session. The listed consultation with RN Catherine provides 30 minutes and does not include treatment. Confirm that it fits your enquiry before booking.
Consultation and treatment appointment
An appointment listing associated with a named service. The title does not guarantee treatment or establish suitability. Ask what the session includes and what assessment is required. Read our appointment-choice guide.
Contraindication
A circumstance that is a reason not to use a particular treatment. Ask your clinician whether any apply to a proposed procedure in your situation; do not decide suitability from a general list alone.
Downtime
A broad term people use for time away from usual activities or for visible recovery changes. Ask exactly what it means for a proposed procedure and your work, exercise, travel and other commitments rather than assuming it means only time off work.
Facial balance
A description of how someone perceives the relationship between facial features. Explain what you mean by balance rather than assuming there is one preferred appearance or standard treatment plan. See our Facial Concerns hub.
Facial lines
A general description of lines you notice on your face. Explain where and when you see them, including during expression or at rest. The description does not establish the cause or recommend a procedure. Read our facial lines guide.
Follow-up
Contact or appointments after an initial assessment or procedure. Ask what is planned, what is included in the cost and how to raise concerns between appointments. Do not assume follow-up is included automatically.
Informed consent
Agreeing to a proposed procedure after receiving and understanding relevant information and having an opportunity to ask questions. Ask about the proposed approach, alternatives, limitations, risks and costs. A signed form is not a substitute for a discussion you understand.
Limitations
What a proposed service cannot reasonably address, what remains uncertain and the boundaries of any expected change. Ask about limitations alongside possible benefits rather than treating a result as guaranteed.
Lip shape and volume
Shape may refer to the outline or features you notice; volume describes fullness. These are different discussion points, not instructions to add product. Read our lip shape, volume and balance guide.
Medical history
Information about your health and previous care that may be relevant to assessment. Prepare details of medicines, supplements, allergies, previous procedures and ongoing care, and ask what else the clinician needs.
Microneedling or skin needling
Names used for the listed SkinPen® microneedling service at Nuva Aesthetics. A name alone does not explain its suitability, risks or recovery. Ask what the proposed procedure involves and how it relates to your assessed concern.
Recovery
The period after a procedure while you heal or return to usual activities. Ask for individual guidance about expected changes, restrictions, review and when to seek help. This glossary does not provide universal timelines.
Referral
Being directed to another healthcare professional or service for assessment or care. Ask why a referral is suggested and how the next steps would be arranged.
Review or touch-up
Terms that may appear in appointment descriptions relating to previous treatment. Confirm what the appointment includes; neither term guarantees an additional procedure, correction or a particular result. Use our previous-treatment review guide for routine enquiries.
Skin texture
A broad description of how the skin surface looks or feels. Explain what you notice rather than treating texture as a diagnosis. Explore our Skin Concerns hub for preparation questions.
Suitability
Whether an option is appropriate for an individual after assessment. A website description, age group, photograph or booking does not establish suitability.
Treatment plan
A proposed approach discussed after assessment. Ask why each part is included, what the alternatives are, the full costs and how it would be reviewed. A plan is not a promise of a particular outcome.
Use the words that make sense to you
If a term is unclear, ask: “What does that mean for me?” You can request an explanation before making a decision. Prepare with our pre-consultation checklist or explore the Consultation Resources hub.
