Lip Shape vs Lip Volume: Questions to Ask

Outline or fullness: what do you want to discuss?

“I want a different lip shape” and “I want more lip volume” are not necessarily the same request. Before considering a procedure, explain which aspect you are asking about and what you would prefer to keep unchanged.

This guide compares the language you can use during a consultation at Nuva Aesthetics in Narellan. It does not compare procedures, recommend adding volume or establish that treatment is appropriate.

Questions about shape

You might be referring to the outline, the upper lip's central curve, a difference between sides or the way your lips look when smiling. Point out the feature you mean instead of relying on a label such as “defined” or “balanced”, which can mean different things to different people.

Try asking: “My question is about this part of the outline, not overall fullness. What assessment would help me understand it?”

Questions about volume

If you mean fullness, explain where you notice it and whether you are describing a longstanding feature or a change. Distinguish your upper and lower lip concerns rather than assuming the same plan would apply to both.

A useful question is: “Does the concern I am describing actually relate to volume, and what would adding volume not address?” This page does not recommend a quantity or a preferred upper-to-lower-lip ratio.

Questions about movement

If you mainly notice a difference during speech or smiling, say so. Ask whether that observation changes the assessment rather than assuming a concern visible in movement should be approached in the same way as one visible at rest.

Describe any new change or symptoms separately. Ask whether medical assessment is needed before discussing cosmetic options.

How to explain your priorities

You can use these statements to start a conversation:

  • “I want to understand the outline, but I am not asking for more overall fullness.”
  • “I notice a difference when I smile that I do not notice at rest.”
  • “I am unsure whether my question is about shape, fullness or previous treatment.”
  • “I would like to know what is realistic before deciding whether to do anything.”

These are ways to communicate, not instructions for treatment. Ask your clinician to explain any proposed approach in relation to your own features.

Why a reference photo is not a treatment plan

A photograph may help you explain a preference, but it cannot establish what is achievable or appropriate for your face. Discuss which features in the image interest you, what you would not want and the limitations of any proposed option. This page does not promise a particular shape, perfect symmetry or a match to another person's appearance.

If you have had previous lip treatment

Bring available records and approximate dates. Explain what was done, what you noticed afterwards and what you want reviewed. Do not assume that adding more or dissolving is the next step.

Our previous-treatment review guide explains how to prepare a routine enquiry. For urgent medical concerns, seek medical care rather than waiting for a routine cosmetic appointment.

Questions before deciding whether to proceed

  • Is my concern about shape, volume, movement or something else?
  • What options could be discussed, including no procedure?
  • What would a proposed approach not change?
  • What risks, possible complications and recovery requirements should I understand?
  • What are the full costs, written aftercare and follow-up arrangements?
